Obituary: Elisabeth Sladen (1 February 1948 - 19 April 2011)

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of Elisabeth Sladen, best known to all as the character Sarah Jane Smith in both Doctor Who and more recently The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Originally from Liverpool, Lis' first on screen (although uncredited) role was in the 1964 film 'Ferry Cross the Mersey', as an extra. Television roles soon followed after repertory work, and she appeared in such programmes as Doomwatch, Z-Cars, Public Eye, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Special Branch.

In 1973 though, she was to star as the latest Doctor Who companion Sarah Jane Smith, and this would be the role that made her well known and liked by the British public. Often citied as the most popular of the Doctor's assistants, Sarah was plucky, sweet, sassy and often more than a match for the Time Lord. Her chemistry with Tom Baker was obvious, and this only served to endear her more to fans of all ages.

After leaving Who, she starred in a number of plays and television roles over the years, but returned to Sarah Jane in 2005, with appearances in both 'School Reunion' and a pilot for the show that would introduce her to a whole new generation of fans; The Sarah Jane Adventures. The show was an instant success, and ran for 4 series' until Lis' death.

May all of us at the Nerdsphere convey our sympathies to Lis' family and friends at this time.

Rest In Peace Lis.
