[OBITUARY] Michael Gough (23rd November 1916 - 17th March 2011)

The British actor Michael Gough has died, aged 94. Known to most movie fans for having a huge Horror genre acting resume (Including stints for Hammer during the 60's), Gough will be most beloved for his performances as butler Alfred Pennyworth in the Tim Burton / Joel Schumacher Batman movies from 1989 - 1997, also reprising the role for commercials as well as two BBC audio plays. Doctor Who fans will know him best for his iconic role as The Celestial Toymaker in the 1966 serial of the same name, a role he was due to reprise for the Colin Baker era had the original Season 23 had gone into production (Although the aborted story "The Nightmare Fair" has subsequently been adapted into a novel by Target Books and as an audio play by Big Finish Productions). Gough also played the role of Councillor Hedin in the Peter Davison serial "Arc of Infinity". In another link to Doctor Who, Gough was married to actress Anneke Wills, who played First / Second Doctor companion Polly, from 1962 until their divorce in 1979. Wills details their marriage in her autobiographies "Self Portrait" and "Naked". Gough married three more times, and is survived by a fourth wife, Henrietta. Although Gough had retired from acting in the mid-90's, Tim Burton would encourage him to make cameos in most of his movies, with Gough's last known acting role being in Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" for Disney in 2010.

On behalf of the Nerdsphere, I wish to send my respects and condolences to the family of Michael Gough at this time.

- Matt
