[OBITUARY] Pennant Roberts (1940 - 2010)

Pennant Roberts, who had directed a ton of British television shows in the 1970s-80s, including episodes for both Blake's 7 and the original Doctor Who series, died this past Tuesday after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 69.

For Doctor Who, Roberts directed the following stories: The Face of Evil, The Sun Makers, The Pirate Planet, Warriors of the Deep and Timelash.

Roberts also directed the unfinished Douglas Adams-penned Tom Baker story "Shada" which was eventually completed for audio with Paul McGann in the lead.

On behalf of the Nerdsphere, I would like to send out my deepest sympathies to the family of Pennant Roberts, including his wife Betsan, at this time.

[VIDEO] Botcon fan film Award Winner - REAL WORLD IACON!

Nerdsphere forum member and professional voice actor Jon Bailey/JON3.0 has won a competition at BotCon to produce a fan-made film. The film is based on MTV's "The Real World" and includes many of our favourite G1 characters under a slight skewed light. Our very own Princess of Plastic, Nicole/Hailstorm provides the voice of "RC" a very *Ahem* well-endowed fembot.

[NEWS] New Tokusatsu show announced: Kamen Rider OOO!

A brand new Kamen Rider will be taking over the airwaves on September 15th. His name is Kamen Rider OOO (Or both "Triple O" or the shorter "O's"). Not much to report at the moment, but I thought that a reveal of the suit will come a long way. There definitely appears to be a "Triple" gimmick at work, with OOO switching between three different modes.

EDIT - Forum appears to be behaving itself again. But I will be looking into a backup plan just in case this happens on a more permanent basis.

[NEWS] Time Lord and ChemBeaker celebrate One Year of Married bliss!

(Thanks to Cosmic Duck for the picture) Today is one year to the day that I clubbed Soph on the head and dragged her to my cave--- No, sorry it's the 21st Century, I meant I slipped her some Rohypnol and-- No, that's not right either (and illegal).

Today marks one year to the day me and Sophie tied the knot. It was without doubt the happiest day of my life, also one of the nuttiest. [RETRO] Transformers Audiobook: Autobots' Lightning Strike

I was doing some YouTube searches when I came across this piece of Transformers history - A 1984 Ladybird Listen & Read book! Put up by YouTube member RETROROBOTRADIO; this is the entire book cut into three parts, and now you can listen to it! It's interesting to note that this was made when the TV show was still in the early stages, so the cast here sound distinctly different (Especially Optimus, whilst Megatron sounds more like Starscream), but the nostalgia factor is very much in full effect, so enjoy!

The Cobra H.I.S.S. (tank) is the stuff of legend where Time Lord is concerned, mainly because he was getting hassled (by virtually everyone) into buying one for a time.

[NEWS] Hasbro releases information regarding it's franchises' immediate futures

Hasbro has issued a full press release detailing many of its toy franchises immediate futures. Here is what they had to say about the Transformers' future:

"On the heels of last year's box office smash, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," and in anticipation of next summer's third instalment, "Transformers 3," licensees around the world are on track to bring an unprecedented line-up of innovative MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE-inspired goods to an ever-widening circle of fans next year. In addition, the licensing program is poised to leverage the début of "Transformers Prime" on The Hub, which will bring action-packed adventures featuring well-known AUTOBOT and DECEPTICON characters to kids' TV screens this fall".

[FORUM NEWS] Toy and Media sections expanded; some sections removed

This morning I have taken the liberty of expanding the toy thread into an entire sub-forum. the new "Toy Franchise" sub-forum now has dedicated sections for Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, Transformers, G.I. Joe and a Retro Section devoted to the toys of yesteryear.

We are also expanding on our Media section. These are both work in progress and are as always subject to change.

By default, I have taken down the eBay and Written reviews sections. Both never really took off and I made the decision to remove them to try and keep the forum tidy.

[VIDEO REVIEW] Transformers Cool Fan Pop!

Nerdsphere forum member The Doctor/Stardub has reviewed....a fan with a bit of candy on the end?! (Oh, and it has Optimus prime on the top.....wow).

R.I.P. Autobot City; hello The Aequitas Chamber

(NOTE: This is a copy and paste of what Matt/Time Lord originally posted on THE NERDSPHERE FORUM.)

Just posting this to update those who might not have LISTENED TO EPISODE 38 OF ABC.

Phil approached me with a plea to take over ABC, and after negotiations, it was decided that ABC just would not work without any of it's original members, so Phil decided to launch the podcast anew. This new podcast will be known as "The Aequitas Chamber" and will eventually feature the team of HotRodG1 and GWolfV3/"The Bone" or Phil and Mikey.

This means that original plans to finish ABC on the day of the Nerdsphere's anniversary is going ahead as planned. We will be keeping the section open for a fortnight after the last episode airs, but that will then be closed down and a new section put in it's place. For those still wanting to listen to the old shows, I will be putting up a special section at the bottom of the forum and you will be able to see all the episodes listed on there.

"The Aquitas Chamber" will start with Phil alongside a rotating rota of guest hosts until Mikey comes back from his hiatus.

Until then, we are still running ABC, so please give us any feedback, listeners questions and City Chatter for these remaining episodes. 50% of what we do is based to listener participation, and if that does not exist we simply cannot do a show properly.

[NEWS] Cartoon Network to announce new Thundercats TV series!

(Talk about this news on the forum by going HERE.)

(Original credit must go to ENI for the scoop, which we are mirroring here)

Warner Bros. Animation will announce tomorrow that it’s launching a new “Thundercats” TV series on the Cartoon Network in 2011.

Look! Tomorrow's press release today!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THUNDERCATS, HO!

WARNER BROS. ANIMATION ANSWERS THE CALL WITH A NEW
TAKE ON THE CLASSIC ANIMATED SERIES “THUNDERCATS,”
TO AIR ON CARTOON NETWORK

(June 3, 2010 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has begun production on “ThunderCats,” an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network, based upon the iconic 1980s action classic. “ThunderCats” is the newest series from WBA, joining “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and the following forthcoming programs: “The Looney Tunes Show,” “MAD,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “Young Justice.” The announcement was made today by Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation.

“In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”

The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including “The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights” and “Halo Legends.” WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter’s expertise to give the “ThunderCats” characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series.

“We at Studio4°C are excited to be in this creative partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to bring ‘ThunderCats’ to life,” said Eiko Tanaka, President and CEO, Studio4°C. “This collaboration combines the strengths of our two companies – high production values and great storytelling – toward reintroducing this classic fan-favorite to a new audience.”

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

About Warner Bros. Animation
